Artist Statement: The background to my piece that I have created is about how some companies put politics into their marketing. And my project is more focused on my opinion and how I don’t like getting marketed to in that way. And for this I choose the Colin Kaepernick Nike Ad. Some background on the Ad and Colin is that he used to be a football player for the San Francisco 49ers and was later fired when the NFL didn’t agree with him kneeling during the national anthem at games as a peaceful protest. And it’s because of this that got his name more light. Then a little bit down the line Nike made an Ad featuring Kaepernick and incorporating a inspiring quote. But to me I felt this wasn’t the right way to advertise. If Nike or Workers of Nike were to say that they support Kaepernick, I think that works and that’s ok it’s another when you decide to make a promotional campaign for your company though, and I think Nike knows a lot better then to do what Pepsi did. While it didn’t hurt Nike as much as it hurt Pepsi when they did their protest ad, it’s just more my opinion that I don’t like getting advertised to in this way. I stand white Colin and the message he’s trying to get out, I just don’t like it when company’s take something I’m for and put it in their commercials to get me to buy their products.
